On paper, tonight’s course looked fairly straightforward. Two 90 degree turns and two gentle curves still proved to be challenging due to the stiff winds that persisted through all races. Rob Leblanc and Red Rock Roasters sponsored the night’s coffee primes, which spiced up the racing in the early laps.

Balloon Fiesta Park generously smoothed out a section of the park on the North end of W Wind rd, opening up a new and exciting course option. The additional section provided a lot more turns, a hill, and protection from the wind, making the night’s racing more exciting than ever! A lightning delay interrupted the C race briefly, but we were still able to complete all races to full distance.

Turnout continues to grow at ABQTNC as more new racers enter the scene. With calmer winds this week, the A race was able to sustain a pace of over 27 mph! Vicki Chavez was consistently driving the pace in the B race, keeping the speeds high and the sprinters on their limit. The story across all three races was the typical struggle of the escapees vs the sprinters, with some very close finishes tipping in favor of the sprinters.

Tonight we debuted the Nascar-style course, counterclockwise. With three challenging turns and constantly shifting wind, the racing has finally shifted in favor of large pack finishes. The A race had a particularly exciting finish. With a late attack, Wouter Zwart was able to hold off the sprinters by mere inches at the line!

The final hotdog course of the year did not disappoint. Hot and fast racing through all categories. Solid cloud cover helped keep the heat bearable despite the temperatures in the high 90s. Once again several newcomers tested their legs against some of ABQs seasoned crit racers, and elevating the level of racing even further.

West Wind Rd Course, hot-dog style. The wind was calm for the first time this year, but the hot dry summer air proved the be just as challenging. Many first-time racers entered the fray, performing exceptionally well against some seasoned TNC racers. The women’s race ran concurrently with the C race, and then gutted it out and raced hard in the B race as well.

West Wind Rd Course, hot-dog style. The wind is finally settling down and temperature is creeping up. During the clinic we discussed what to expect from USAC sanctioned crits. Free laps, primes, and other scenarios unique to crits were covered. Turnout was the largest of the year so far, and made it possible to have a women’s only prime as well as a women’s race that ran concurrently with the B field.
